French Toast Casserole

1 large loaf French bread
8 eggs
3 cups milk
4 tbsp sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
¾ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
4 tbsp butter (cut into small pieces)

Tear bread into 1 to 2 inch chunks.
Put torn bread in a 12 inch Dutch oven.
In a separate bowl, beat together all remaining ingredients, except butter.
Pour over bread.
Let bread soak for a little while.
Dot the top with butter.
Using 8 coals under and 16 on top, bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes, or until eggs are set.
Makes 6 to 8 servings.
